As the newest half marathon in San Diego, the event has seen positive reviews and participant experiences for the past two years. The 2019 half marathon course again offers an exclusive point-to-point destination route. Runners will start near the Kaiser Permanente San Diego Medical Center in Kearny Mesa and enjoy fast stretches along Friars Road, minor elevation changes, views of Mission Bay along Ingraham Bridge and a finish line with an ocean breeze at Ski Beach in Mission Bay.
Benefiting Make-A-Wish San Diego, the Kaiser Permanente Thrive Half Marathon & 5K is an opportunity for participants to take part knowing they are directly supporting children diagnosed with a critical illness whose wishes are granted by Make-A-Wish San Diego.
In 2018, Make-A-Wish San Diego granted 212 wishes, creating positive and lasting change in the lives of children. Make-A-Wish beneficiary Mia, age 13, has chronic lung disease. She wished for a new best friend, a puppy. A Labradoodle named Oliver was her wish come true. Mia's parents shared that adding Oliver to their family will greatly enhance Mia's daily quality of life and bring her so much joy. Events like the Kaiser Permanente Thrive Half Marathon & 5K make granting more wishes like Mia’s possible. Each year, Kaiser Permanente Thrive Half Marathon has committed to donate the amount to grant one wish for a local child. This goal has been surpassed each year, and the event looks forward to granting another wish in 2019.
